Choose to Believe

“In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe.” Psalm 78:32

You could say that I’m kind of a skeptical person. I don’t always believe everything I hear. I find that people tend to exaggerate their accomplishments, endeavors and experiences. Sometimes I wonder how much of what they are saying is actually true! “That buck I shot at was at least a 10-pointer!” “She must’ve been going 80mph when she passed me!” “I had my room all clean, and Susie came in and messed everything up!” I’ll believe it when I see it. That’s my motto.

It seems like that’s how many people view God. “God loves you / God will provide your needs / God has the power to do as He wishes.” “I’ll believe it when I see it.” Yet, the Scripture is clear that, most of the time, we don’t believe it when we see it. God parted the Red Sea for the Israelites and a few days later, they wondered if God was going to let them die in the wilderness (Exodus 15:24). Jesus did dozens of miracles–healing the blind, the lame, raising the dead–yet many people refused to acknowledge Him as Messiah (John 12:37). The rich man in Luke 16 asked for Lazarus to rise from the dead and warn his brothers about hell, but he was told they wouldn’t believe (Luke 16:31).

Friends–it is not for lack of evidence that we do not take God at His word. It is the stubbornness and hardness of our hearts that keeps us from believing. We do not trust Him, because we choose not to. What is happening in your life right now? Do you need to choose to believe?
