Choose This Day Whom You Will Serve

Joshua 24:15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you
will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the
gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will
serve the Lord.

As Joshua approaches the end of his life and leadership of the nation of Israel, he is
concerned about one thing- the people’s future faithfulness. For all that Joshua had
seen- slavery in Egypt, the plagues and the deliverance of God, the crossing of the Red
Sea, Israel’s refusal to trust God by entering the Promised Land, forty years of traipsing
around the wilderness in circles and the victories God gave them when they finally
came into Canaan- he knew the inconsistencies of human nature and behavior. He also
knew that unless the people made a conscious decision to serve God faithfully, they
would quickly fall into sin and disobedience. “Choose this day whom you will serve,”
he challenges them. My friends- you will make a choice today whom you will serve. If
you do not willingly, intentionally choose to serve God, you will by default serve the god
of this world, who blinds our eyes to the Truth (II Corinthians 4:4).
