Beyond the Surface

“Superficiality is the curse of our age.”
Richard Foster

Think about most of the conversations that you have had in the past few days or weeks; how many of them would you say have been deep and meaningful ? It is amazing how we can go through life spending time with lots of different people, even some who are really close to us, and not have meaningful conversations with them. It is so much easier to deal with surface issues like the weather, latest sports scores, some local event or a TV show and steer clear of anything that has to do with who we really are.

Now, when I make a few of the suggestions that are to follow, I want you to understand that I am well aware of the fact that you cannot get deep with everyone, nor am I suggesting that you should try to. But, you should have a few people in your life that are allowed to get below the surface and help you navigate some of those internal struggles.

So, here are a few questions to ask yourself that may help you in the process of getting beyond superficial.

  • Who do you have in your life that is spiritually solid?
  • Who do you have in your life that has navigated some difficulties with grace?
  • Who do you have who asks you the deeper questions already?
  • When was the last time you asked someone who is ahead of you in life out for coffee just to pick their brains?

If you can’t answer any of these questions, start figuring out what you need to change so you can.
You will be glad you did.
