Be Still
“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” Psalms 46:10 NLT
I used to think that this was something that was hard for me. The reason for that thought was because I often stopped in the verse at “Be still,” and I know that I have always struggled to be still. But the verse is not simply telling us to be physically still. I like the way Eugene Peterson put it in The Message, “Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your high God…above everything.” The truth that I had to come to grips with is that God is asking me to stop my hustle long enough to see and know that He is above all. In order for this STOP to happen I need to be still in my mind as well as with my body. This is a difficult task. We have been programmed over the past few years to constantly fill our minds with information. We watch things on TV, we scroll through info on our phones, tablets, and computers. We feel a constant need to fill our minds with something. I feel that Satan has done a masterful job at making us distracted from the one person who deserves our attention, Jesus. We are only able to focus on him when our mind, heart, and bodies are STILL, so we can fully focus on knowing who He is. God does not speak in a hurry; it is in the quiet thoughtful moments that we will hear the voice of God.
You may be thinking, “That isn’t hard for me, I am still often.” That may very well be true. Let me ask you who or what you are focused on when you are still. Is it yourself and all of your stuff, or are you coming to a greater understanding of who God is and how great He is?
Let me challenge you to take a few minutes today and, “Stop, be still, and know God.” You will be glad you did.
