Be Decisive

I was reading the book Extreme Ownership a little while ago and the author was saying that one of the failures of leadership is not being decisive enough. Not being willing to put our all on the line, because we are too concerned with being blamed if things go sideways. The book was being written with business in mind, but this thought applies to all of life, church leadership included. I think for a lot of us, we never step up and fully commit to much of anything because we don’t want to be responsible or accountable for what is or isn’t happening. We want to be a little bit decisive; that way we can find a loophole and point our fingers at others when things are not just right.
Take a look at your own life at home, at work, at church or wherever you help out. How often do you tell people, “Maybe”? Sometimes we say “maybe” for great reasons or because we know we should say “no” but we don’t want to make others feel bad; but most times we say it because we want a way out.
You know, the Bible speaks into this topic. “Let your ‘yes’ mean ‘yes’, and your ‘no’ mean ‘no’,” or “I would rather you be hot or cold.”  As leaders it is our job to lead, to say “Yes, we are going this way,” or “No, that is not something we need to be doing.” We will not always get everything right; that’s okay. When we don’t, we own it. We apologize, make adjustments and move on. There is no room for our ego and self preservation in leadership.
This week as you lead, with yourself and others, try to be a little more decisive. Own it. You will be glad you did.
