Amazed
“But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed.” Acts 12:16
Scene: the early church is being harassed and persecuted for their faith. King Herod decides to arrest and execute James, the brother of John. This pleases the Jews immensely, and wanting to keep them happy, he arrests Peter, doubtless with the same outcome in mind. When the church hears that Peter has been arrested, they pray fervently (Acts 12:1-5). Miraculously, wonderfully, God sends an angel to rescue Peter from his chains! Peter immediately goes to the home where he knows the church has gathered to pray (Acts 12:12). When a servant tells the believers that Peter is at the door, they think she has lost her mind (Acts 12:15). Peter persists, and finally they open the door! They are amazed to see him!
My question is this–if they were praying fervently about Peter’s situation, why were they stunned when God delivered him? The answer can only be one of two things–either they were praying for his rescue, but didn’t really believe that God could do it, or they were praying for Peter to have the courage to die well! Either way, there is a problem–lack of faith. And before we rail against this group of believers, I wonder if we should examine our own hearts. What do we really believe that God can do? Do we believe He can cleanse the heart of the vilest sinner? Do we believe He can mend broken marriages? Reverse impossible financial situations? Heal diseases? Transform communities? Turn whole nations back to Himself? We often say that we believe God can do anything. But do we really? Do we pray that way? Believe, my friend–and be amazed.
