Acquire Truth

“Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.” Proverbs 23:23

When I’m in the car, I enjoy listening to podcasts. One of my favorites is Dave Ramsey. He’s very entertaining! And I am concerned about handling the money God has given me well, so that I can be generous. He often talks about retirement accounts like 401k’s which are usually in growth stock mutual funds.

The other day, as I was listening to him talk about these investments, I thought of the verse above. Solomon, the wisest man in the world (I Kings 4:30), gives us some advice. “Acquire truth and never sell it.” Let me tell you why I think truth is so valuable. We live in a world where things are constantly changing. Think about technology. 15 years ago, I didn’t have a cell phone. Today, I can make a mortgage payment from my phone in less than 10 seconds. This kind of change is not what is most concerning, however. Think of the cultural shifts circling around us–turning away from the definition of marriage that has been widely accepted for 10,000 years, attempting to blur the indelible link between biology and gender, and determining whether or not a child can be killed legally after he is completely out of his mother’s womb, or if part of his body needs to still be inside of her.

How can our society even entertain these thoughts? Friends, everything is negotiable when you have no foundation of truth. In fact, the word Solomon uses for truth literally means “firmness.” The Word of God is Truth; it never changes (I Peter 1:24-25). Spend the time to acquire Truth by reading His Word. Grasp it and don’t ever let it go.
