A New Day
“And Moses said to the people, ‘Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.’” Exodus 14:13
In 1993, the movie Groundhog Day came out. In the movie, a local weatherman kept living the same day over and over. No matter what he did, he couldn’t make the cycle stop. While of course this premise is fictional, there can be times when we feel like we are facing the same issues and problems day after day.
You may be familiar with the story of the first 14 chapters of Exodus. The Israelites had been enslaved in Egypt for over 400 years. Day after day, they lived in servitude, until God moved Pharaoh’s heart to free them. As they fled, they found themselves trapped–the Red Sea was in front of them and Pharaoh’s army was behind them. What would they do? God miraculously parted the sea so they could cross, and the entire Egyptian army drowned when they tried to cross behind them (Exodus 14:28-29). What caught my attention was the end of Moses’ statement–“For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.”
As children of God, we are encouraged not to fear. We are encouraged to stand firm. We are encouraged to see and experience the wonderful salvation and deliverance God promises those who trust Him (I Corinthians 15:57). But also, understand this, friends–that as each day passes, so do its cares and burdens. We do not have to re-live the struggles of the past. Each day with God is a new day, with new strength and new grace (Lamentations 3:22-23).
